Social in schema is a medium-priority check in the Social Media SEO category. It is not urgent, but it is one of the cheapest wins on the whole list: telling search engines which social profiles belong to you, in machine-readable form, so they can connect your brand across the web and, over time, build the knowledge panel that shows your logo and links.

What this check actually means

This check looks for your social profiles declared inside your structured data — specifically the sameAs property on your Organization or Person schema. sameAs is a list of authoritative URLs that represent the same entity: your Facebook page, your LinkedIn, your X account, your YouTube channel, your Instagram. A failure means either you have no Organization/Person schema at all, or you have it but the sameAs array is empty — your site is not telling Google that the brand on the page and the accounts on those platforms are one and the same.

Note the distinction from social sharing markup. Open Graph and Twitter Card tags control how your page looks when someone shares it. sameAs is different — it is about entity identity, telling search engines who you are, not styling a shared link. Both matter; this check is about the identity half.

Why it matters for SEO

The payoff is entity understanding. When Google can confidently link your website to your verified social presence, it treats your brand as a more established, more trustworthy entity — the raw material of a knowledge panel, and increasingly of how AI answer engines decide whether “your brand” is a real, coherent thing or a name they cannot pin down. It will not rocket you up the rankings tomorrow. What it does is help the machines resolve your identity correctly, which is quietly foundational to everything else you do in search.

There is a defensive angle too. If you do not claim your own social identity in schema, you leave more room for confusion between you and similarly named brands. Declaring it is how you stake the claim clearly.

How I would fix it in WordPress

Difficulty Level: EASY – This fix is straightforward and can typically be completed by anyone with basic WordPress knowledge.

Estimated Time: 10 min

This is genuinely a ten-minute job, because both major SEO plugins expose it as a settings screen rather than raw code:

  1. In Yoast SEO, go to Settings → Site basics / Site representation and confirm you have declared whether the site represents an Organization or a Person — this determines which schema type is output.
  2. Add every official social profile URL in the plugin’s social accounts fields. Yoast and Rank Math both feed these straight into the sameAs array automatically.
  3. Include only profiles you actually own and keep active. A dead, three-follower account you forgot the password to does not help you — list the accounts that genuinely represent the brand.
  4. Run your homepage through Google’s Rich Results Test and confirm the Organization (or Person) block appears with your social URLs populated in sameAs.
  5. While you are in there, make sure your logo is set in the same schema — it travels with the Organization entity and is what a knowledge panel displays.

Keep the list honest and current

One caveat worth stating plainly, because it is where good intentions go stale. sameAs is only useful if it points at live, active, on-brand profiles. I have seen sites list a defunct Google+ page years after that platform closed, or a personal account that has nothing to do with the business. That does not just fail to help — it muddies the entity picture you are trying to sharpen. Treat the list as something you review when you review the rest of the site: add new platforms when you genuinely join them, and remove any account you have abandoned. Five real, active profiles beat a dozen half-dead ones every time.

Need More Help?

If the sameAs data validates but no knowledge panel appears, be patient — knowledge panels are earned over time as Google accumulates corroborating signals, not switched on by a single setting. Make sure the same social links also appear as real, clickable links somewhere on your site, which reinforces the schema. A complete SEO Roadmap audit will confirm your Organization schema is present and correctly populated across the site, not just on the homepage.
