HowTo schema is an important SEO check in the Structured Data & Schema category. This is a medium-priority issue. While not urgent, fixing it will improve your overall SEO health.
What this check is really about
HowTo schema is schema.org markup that tells a search engine “this page is a set of steps to accomplish a task”, with each step, its tools, and its materials labelled. The check verifies that your genuinely instructional pages carry it. There is an important caveat I have to put right at the front, because it changes how you should treat this check: Google removed the HowTo rich result from general search results, so the visible carousel most people were chasing is gone. The markup still has real value — but for reasons that outlast one search feature, and you should fix it for those reasons, not for a rich result that no longer appears.
Why it still matters for SEO
- Structured step data helps search engines and AI answer systems understand and cite your instructions accurately
- Marking up steps forces a cleaner page structure — numbered steps, clear tools and materials — which helps human readers directly
- Well-structured how-to content is exactly what generative and voice systems pull from, and that surface is growing while the old rich result shrank
- Valid, honest markup keeps you aligned with the semantic web even as specific result formats come and go
How to check whether you have this problem
First decide whether the page is actually a how-to. A genuine how-to has a task and ordered steps to complete it; a listicle or an opinion piece is not, and forcing HowTo schema onto it is a mistake. For real instructional pages, run the URL through Google’s Rich Results Test or a schema validator and look for a valid HowTo item with step, and where relevant tool and supply, populated. The SEO Roadmap audit flags instructional pages missing the markup.
How to fix this in WordPress
Difficulty Level: MEDIUM – This fix requires some technical knowledge or familiarity with WordPress settings and plugins.
Estimated Time: 20 min
Step 1: Structure the page as real steps first
Before any markup, make the page itself a clean sequence: an ordered list or clearly headed step sections, each with a single action, and a short tools-and-materials list where it applies. Markup should describe what is on the page, never invent structure the reader cannot see. If the page is not genuinely step-shaped, stop here — this check does not apply to it.
Step 2: Generate the schema from a plugin, not by hand
Rank Math ships a HowTo block for the editor, and Yoast SEO offers a How-to structured data block as well. Use one of them so the markup stays in sync with the visible content automatically, rather than hand-writing JSON-LD that drifts the moment someone edits the post. Fill in each step’s name and text, and add tools and supplies where they exist.
Step 3: Keep it honest and singular
Emit exactly one HowTo block per page and make sure another plugin is not also outputting competing schema. Every marked-up step must match a visible step. Do not mark up steps that are not shown, and do not stuff keywords into step names.
Step 4: Verify
- Run the URL through the Rich Results Test and confirm the HowTo item validates with no errors
- Confirm every step in the markup corresponds to a visible step on the page
- Clear your cache so the updated markup is served
- Re-run the SEO Roadmap audit to confirm the check passes
Recommended Tools & Plugins
These tools can help you fix and prevent this issue:
- Yoast SEO – Comprehensive SEO plugin with built-in checks
- Rank Math – Feature-rich SEO plugin with detailed analysis
- Google Search Console – Free tool to monitor your site’s search presence
- SEO Roadmap – Complete SEO audit and action plan tool
What I would not do
- Do not force HowTo schema onto listicles or opinion pieces that are not genuine step-by-step guides
- Do not chase a rich result Google has already retired; fix this for comprehension and AI citation, not a carousel
- Do not hand-code JSON-LD that will silently drift from the content on the next edit
- Do not run two plugins emitting competing schema on the same page
