Local keywords targeted is a high-priority check in the Local SEO category. It has a significant impact on your visibility, because for a business that serves a place, ranking for the generic term without the location attached is ranking for the wrong query. This is where local traffic is won or quietly lost.

What this check is really about

The check is asking whether your content actually targets the way local customers search. Nobody types “plumber”. They type “emergency plumber in Leeds” or “plumber near me”. If every page on your site is written for the head term with no geographic intent, you are competing nationally for traffic that will never convert while ignoring the local searches that would.

Targeting local keywords means your titles, headings, body copy, and metadata reflect the service and the area you serve — without descending into the spammy “plumber London, plumber Camden, plumber Islington” stuffing that Google penalised out of existence years ago. The line between coverage and stuffing is real, and this check lives on the right side of it.

The trap: doorway pages

Here is the mistake I would steer you away from before you make it. The tempting shortcut is to spin up fifty near-identical “[service] in [town]” pages, swapping only the place name. Google calls these doorway pages and treats them as a manipulation. They used to work; they now actively hurt you.

The version that works takes more effort and rewards it: a genuine page per location or service area with real, specific content — local landmarks, actual projects, service-area details, real testimonials from that area. If you cannot write something genuinely different about serving Town B than Town A, you do not need a second page. One strong local page beats ten thin ones every time.

How to fix this in WordPress

Difficulty Level: EASY – This fix is straightforward and can typically be completed by anyone with basic WordPress knowledge.

Estimated Time: 2 hr

  1. Do the keyword work first. Find the real local phrases — service plus place, plus “near me” variants — using Google’s autocomplete, the “People also ask” box, and your Search Console query report for terms you already half-rank for.
  2. Rewrite your core service pages so the primary local phrase appears in the title tag, the H1, and the opening paragraph naturally. Use your SEO plugin to set a location-aware meta title and description.
  3. Build one substantial page per genuine service area, each with content that could only have been written about that place.
  4. Match your on-site targeting to a complete, consistent Google Business Profile and identical NAP (name, address, phone) across the site — local ranking leans heavily on that consistency.
  5. Add LocalBusiness schema so the area you serve is machine-readable, not just implied.

Common mistakes I see

  • Mass-producing thin “[service] in [town]” doorway pages that Google discounts or penalises.
  • Stuffing a list of towns into the footer and calling it local SEO.
  • Targeting local keywords on-site while the Google Business Profile is half-empty or the NAP is inconsistent.
  • Chasing the biggest city nearby instead of the places you actually get customers from.
