Well-formatted content is an important SEO check in the Content Quality Signals category. This is a medium-priority issue. While not urgent, fixing it will improve your overall SEO health.
What this check actually means
This check is about structure, not prose quality. It asks whether your content is broken into a readable shape — a logical heading hierarchy, paragraphs short enough to scan, lists where you are listing things, and enough visual breathing room that a reader does not hit a wall of text. It fails on the pattern I see constantly: a genuinely useful 1,500-word article dumped as one undifferentiated block, no subheadings, ten-line paragraphs, nothing for the eye to hold onto.
Good formatting is not decoration. It is how you make an argument navigable — how a reader, and a search engine, can tell what the page is about and find the part they came for.
Why it matters
People do not read web pages top to bottom; they scan, and they decide within seconds whether the page is worth their time. Well-structured content passes that scan test — headings answer “is my question in here?”, short paragraphs invite the eye in, lists make steps and options obvious. Poorly formatted content fails it, and the reader leaves. That bounce is a signal, and it compounds: a page people abandon is a page search engines learn not to trust.
Structure also does concrete SEO work. A clean heading hierarchy helps search engines understand your page’s outline and is what makes a passage eligible for a featured snippet. A well-formed list is what gets pulled into a “how to” or “best of” result. And on mobile, where most of your readers are, dense unbroken text is far harder to bear than on a wide desktop screen. Formatting that reads well on a phone is formatting that ranks.
How to check it
- Open a long post on your phone and scroll. If you hit paragraphs longer than four or five lines, or long stretches with no subheading, those are your problems.
- Check your heading structure: one H1 (the title), H2s for main sections, H3s nested under them — not headings chosen for their visual size out of order.
- Look for places where you are describing a sequence or a set of options in prose that would read better as a list.
- Skim with your eyes half-closed. If the page is a uniform grey slab with no landmarks, a reader sees the same thing.
How to Fix This in WordPress
Difficulty Level: EASY – This fix is straightforward and can typically be completed by anyone with basic WordPress knowledge.
Estimated Time: varies
The block editor makes all of this easy; the work is judgment, not technical skill.
Step 1: Impose a heading hierarchy
Break the piece into clear sections with descriptive H2 headings, and use H3s for sub-points beneath them. Pick heading levels for their place in the outline, not for how big they look. A reader — and Google — should be able to understand the whole article from the headings alone.
Step 2: Shorten paragraphs and add lists
Split long paragraphs so each one carries a single idea; two to four sentences is a comfortable target for the web. Convert any “first, then, also, finally” sequence or set of options into a proper ordered or unordered list. Use bold sparingly to mark the genuinely key phrase in a section, not to highlight half the page.
Step 3: Fix your best pages first
Do not reformat the whole archive at once. Pull your highest-traffic and highest-intent pages from Search Console and give those the treatment first — the readability gain lands where the most people will feel it.
Step 4: Verify
- Clear your WordPress cache if you’re using a caching plugin
- Re-read the page on a phone to confirm it now scans easily
- Re-run the SEO Roadmap audit to confirm the formatting check passes

What I would avoid
- Choosing heading levels for their font size rather than their logical place, which scrambles the outline search engines read.
- Bolding so much text that nothing stands out — emphasis everywhere is emphasis nowhere.
- Breaking content into so many tiny fragments that it reads as choppy and thin.
- Adding formatting to disguise weak content — structure helps a good argument, it cannot rescue an empty one.
