Competitor link analysis is an important SEO check in the Off-Page SEO Signals category. This is a lower-priority optimization. Address it after handling more critical issues.
What this check is really about
Competitor link analysis is the disciplined version of “why do they outrank me?” Instead of guessing, you pull the backlink profiles of the sites beating you for your money keywords and look for the links they have that you do not. Those gaps are your roadmap: sites that already link to two of your three competitors are, statistically, the most likely to link to you as well. This is off-page work, so it sits lower on the priority list — but it is the difference between building links at random and building the specific links that move a competitive term.
I want to be honest about where this belongs in the queue. If your on-page fundamentals, technical health, and content are not sorted, chasing competitor backlinks is polishing the roof while the foundation cracks. Do the boring internal work first. When you have genuinely earned the right to compete on links, this analysis tells you where to spend the outreach hours so none of them are wasted.
Why the gap, not the count, is what matters
The instinct is to compare raw backlink numbers and panic when a competitor has ten times as many. Ignore the count. A thousand scraped directory links are worth less than a dozen genuine editorial mentions from sites your audience actually reads. What you are hunting for is the relevant, earnable link — the industry roundup, the resource page, the supplier directory, the journalist who covers your niche — that already points at competitors and would plausibly point at you. That is the link-gap, and it is the only part of a competitor’s profile you can realistically act on.
Read the pattern, not just the list. If three competitors all earned links from the same conference, guest-post outlet, or trade publication, that source is a genuine channel in your industry, not a one-off. Those repeated sources are where I would start, because a link others earned twice is a link with a proven path.
How to Fix This in WordPress
Difficulty Level: MEDIUM – This fix requires some technical knowledge or familiarity with WordPress settings and plugins.
Estimated Time: 4 hr
Note that this is a strategy task more than a WordPress-settings task — the analysis happens in your backlink tool, and the follow-through happens in outreach. A workable pass:
- Pick your true competitors. Not your biggest-brand rivals — the sites that actually outrank you for the specific queries you care about. Search your money terms and take the top three or four organic results.
- Run a link-gap report. In a backlink tool such as Ahrefs or Semrush, feed in those competitors and your own domain, and pull the referring domains they share that you are missing.
- Filter to what you can earn. Discard the scraped and low-quality domains. Keep resource pages, industry roundups, trade press, supplier and partner directories, and genuine editorial sites. Sort by how many competitors each links to.
- Turn the shortlist into outreach. For each target, decide what you would actually pitch — a better resource, a data piece, a guest contribution, a partnership. A link gap you never act on is just a spreadsheet.
On the WordPress side, the productive companion move is making yourself genuinely link-worthy: a strong resource or statistics page, clean shareable URLs, and no broken internal links to erode trust. Links are earned by the asset, not by the outreach email alone.
Recommended Tools & Plugins
These tools can help you fix and prevent this issue:
- Yoast SEO – Comprehensive SEO plugin with built-in checks
- Rank Math – Feature-rich SEO plugin with detailed analysis
- Google Search Console – Free tool to monitor your site’s search presence
- SEO Roadmap – Complete SEO audit and action plan tool
The mistakes I see most often
- Chasing total backlink count instead of the relevant, earnable gap.
- Buying links to close the gap quickly — a fast route to a Google penalty that costs far more than the rankings gained.
- Analysing competitors who rank for different intent than you actually target.
- Producing a beautiful gap report and never doing a single piece of outreach from it.
Need More Help?
If outreach is not converting, the problem is usually the asset you are pointing people to, not the pitch. Strengthen the linkable page first. Consult an SEO specialist for a link strategy on a competitive term, review your backlink tool’s documentation to use link-gap features properly, and run a complete site audit with SEO Roadmap for a prioritized action plan.
