FAQPage schema is an SEO check in the Structured Data & Schema category, flagged as a medium-priority issue. It is worth doing well — but it comes with a 2023 twist that most guides still get wrong, and I would rather you understand the twist than bolt schema onto every page and expect stars.
What this check actually looks at
FAQPage structured data is Schema.org markup that tells search engines “this page contains a list of questions and their answers.” The check verifies that pages with a genuine FAQ section expose that content as valid FAQPage schema — correctly formed, matching the visible content, and not stuffed with questions that do not appear on the page.
Why it matters — and the 2023 reality
Here is the context this check will not give you. In August 2023, Google restricted FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health websites. For everyone else, FAQPage markup no longer produces the expandable Q&A rich result in search. So if your only reason for adding it is the pretty accordion in the SERP, that reason is largely gone for commercial sites.
That does not make the markup worthless. Clean, accurate FAQPage schema still helps machines — including AI answer engines and assistants — understand and extract your Q&A content, and well-structured FAQ content on the page continues to serve real users and win featured snippets on merit. The value simply moved from “get a rich result” to “be cleanly machine-readable and genuinely useful.” That is a better foundation anyway.
How to fix it in WordPress
Difficulty Level: EASY – This fix is straightforward and can typically be completed by anyone with basic WordPress knowledge.
Estimated Time: 20 min
- Add FAQs only to pages where a real FAQ genuinely belongs — product pages, service pages, support articles. Do not paste a fake FAQ onto a blog post purely to inject schema; that is the exact misuse Google penalises.
- Use the block editor’s FAQ block or your SEO plugin. Rank Math and Yoast SEO both output valid FAQPage schema from a dedicated FAQ block, keeping the visible content and the markup in sync automatically.
- Make sure every question and answer in the schema is also visible on the page. Schema that does not match visible content is a structured-data violation.
- Validate the result with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator before you call it done.
What I would do
Write the FAQ for the human first, mark it up second. The winning move in 2026 is not schema volume — it is answering the questions your customers actually ask, in plain language, on the page where the decision is being made. Do that, wrap it in valid FAQPage markup so machines can read it cleanly, and skip the temptation to spray FAQ schema across pages that have no real questions on them. Genuine Q&A content that happens to be well-marked-up ages far better than markup bolted onto thin content chasing a rich result that most sites can no longer get.
